~ Having a good place to raise children and provide them with a good education

~ Having a physical structure where you and your family feel safe

~ Allows more space for your family

~ Gives control of what you may do with living space (e.g., renovations)

As an Investment

Key tips: How to avoid payroll fraud and non-compliance penalties

Posted by Carolyn Mack at Jan 10, 2012 | No Comments »

Small businesses and startups are particularly vulnerable to payroll fraud, oftentimes without their knowing. According to the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, payroll fraud accounts for 8.5 percent of occupational fraud the world over and costs businesses an estimated $72,000 per case. Small firms often lack anti-fraud resources and controls, exposing them to greater risk. Here are some tips for preventing payroll fraud and avoiding penalties, as outlined by the National Federation of Independent Business.

Consider using backgrounds checks

Anyone who has access to company bank accounts for the purpose of processing payrolls should be obligated to undergo a background check, whether prior to hiring or after the fact. Such screenings can ensure that a candidate is trustworthy to handle company funds.

What are the joys of home ownership?

Posted by Carolyn Mack at Dec 11, 2011 | No Comments »

Owning a home allows you and your family a stable environment. You become part of a neighborhood and community with a sense of belonging. With renting, neighbors come and go, but homeowners tend to stay longer in their neighborhoods and establish longer-term relationships.

Many people enter the domain of homeownership as young couples looking to build a family and nest egg. They plan on starting a family and need room to grow. These family homes will see many firsts and will be a part of countless memories. As well, homeownership gives families more room to entertain and this means extended family will also share in building memories.

It is not only young families seeking homeownership. Families with young people seek larger homes for their growing family. Retiring adults may also wish to start a new phase and new memories by seeking out warmer climates or smaller more convenient home environments.

These memories and moments are what life is all about.

Posted by Carolyn Mack at Nov 27, 2011 | No Comments »

Isn’t it funny how Tim Tebow is 5-1 as the starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos, and folks are still saying that he’s not an NFL-caliber quarterback?

His accuracy may be spotty and his delivery unconventional, but there are certain intangibles that have helped him overcome his own shortcomings as a passer to make sure that his team is on the winning end of the scoreboard at the end of the game.

There are plenty of gritty winners on Wall Street, making the most of their niche limitations to somehow come out on top. Let’s go over a few of the market’s surprising companies that, like Tim Tebow, are not only surviving but actually thriving in challenging circumstances.

BoA, Other Big Banks Being Reviewed for Antitrust Violations

Posted by Carolyn Mack at Nov 22, 2011 | No Comments »

Savings Accounts and Money Market Rates provided by 23 November 2011 Though banks went back on their proposal to impose fees for using debit cards, the incident is not over for several of the countrys biggest banks. The Los Angeles Times reports that the U.S. Department of Justice could begin looking into the possibility of antitrust violations among the banks involved.

Several of the countrys largest banks – including Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo – looked to recoup losses from the new limits on debit card transaction fees in part by charging customers in the range of $5 per month to use their debit cards.

Though the banks changed their plans in the wake of a public outcry and a flood of customers moving their accounts, Representative Peter Welch, a Democrat from Vermont, decried the incident as a likely case of collusion, or at least price signaling.

Welch and several other House Democrats called on the Justice Department to investigate the banks for possible antitrust violations, according to Bloomberg. Read more…

Four Business Cliches to Rise Above and Forget

Posted by Carolyn Mack at Nov 14, 2011 | No Comments »

In Hollywood, a good script or idea for a film can easily be brought down by the hackneyed musings of a few uninspired outsiders. Said another way, it’s not uncommon for an artist or director’s vision to get hijacked by their financiers – these individuals, ruthlessly in search of profits, end up distorting the product and injecting it with tired cliches and filmic chestnuts.

The same is true when it comes to business and entrepreneurship, the only difference being that these corrupting forces can come from a variety of sources: investors, board members, regulations, employees and even market myths. Here are four of the most egregious business platitudes:

1.) “The customer is always right!”

To be frank, there are too many business myths to count. Just like

APEC must tell Europe to act

Australian federal Treasurer Wayne Swan Thursday called on Asia-Pacific region leaders to form a united voice to urge Europe address its financial crisis quickly. Australia’s share market fell around 3 percent Thursday morning, as fresh fears about the stability of Italy and Greece deepened the EuroZone debt crisis overnight.

Mr. Swan, who will attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) finance ministers meeting, said the APEC meeting came at a very difficult time for the International economy with @ of the World’s biggest growth engines misfiring.

While Asia is outperforming other regions, it had not escaped the impact of slower growth on both sides of the Atlantic.

“Every single economy represented at APEC has been impacted by 18 months of failure by European leaders to deal with their sovereign debt crisis,” he told Australia Associated Press. “This i
